Controls on Nutrient Cycling in Estuarine Mangrove Lake Sediments

چکیده

We estimated the net exchange of nitrogen and phosphorus species using core incubations under light dark conditions in estuarine lakes that are aquatic interface between freshwater Everglades marine Florida Bay. These adjacent shallow water Bay environments sites where restoration hydrological flows will likely have largest impact on salinity. Sediment respiration, measured by oxygen uptake, averaged (±S.D.) ?2400 ± 1300, ?300 1000, 1900 1400 ?mol m?2 h?1 for incubations, gross photosynthesis estimates, respectively, with consistent uptake microelectrode profiles. Although most fluxes soluble reactive phosphorus, nitrate, N2–N were low both incubation conditions, we observed a number very high efflux events NH4+ during incubations. A significant decrease NH4+flux was light. The differences effluxes occurred periods coverage macrophyte Chara hornemannii Wallman, > 200 h?1. Increasing flow from is expected to expand lower salinity suitable Chara, therefore, diminish sediment may fuel algal blooms.

Nitrogen cycling in deeply oxygenated sediments: Results in Lake Superior and implications for marine sediments

To understand the nitrogen (N) cycle in sediments with deep oxygen penetration, we measured pore-water profiles to calculate N fluxes and rates at 13 locations in Lake Superior in water depths ranging from 26 to 318 m. Sediments with high oxygen demand, such as in nearshore or high-sedimentation areas, contribute disproportionally to benthic N removal, despite covering only a small portion of t...

Effects of Nutrient Enrichment on Within-stand Cycling in a Mangrove Forest

Within-stand nutrient cycling is dependent on many factors, including primary productivity, nutrient-use efficiency, nutrient resorption, sclerophylly, decomposition, nutritional quality of plant tissue, and allocation to defense. The efficiency of these plantmediated processes depends on nutrient availability in the environment and inherent functional properties of plants. However, little is k...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons fingerprints in the Pichavaram mangrove-estuarine sediments, southeastern India

The sources and historical deposition of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in dated sediment cores from the Pichavaram mangrove-estuarine complex. The ΣPAH flux in mangrove and estuarine sediments are 0.064 ± 0.031 μg/cm 2 /yr and 0.043 ± 0.020 μg/cm 2 /yr, respectively. The PAH flux in sediments increases up-core coinciding with rapid urbanization since the 1970s. Th...

Fatty acids in an estuarine mangrove ecosystem.

Fatty acids have been successfully used to trace the transfer of organic matter in coastal and estuarine food webs. To delineate these web connections, fatty acid profiles were analyzed in species of microbes (Azotobacter vinelandii, and Lactobacillus xylosus), prawns (Metapenaeus monoceros and Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and finfish (Mugil cephalus), that are associated with decomposing leaves ...
